I LOVE a book which is set in places you know, and that’s why this book initially appealed to me. It’s great to be able to picture the hero or villain in a setting you recognise and can identify with, and with The Impossible Dead spending time in Edinburgh, Fife and Stirling it ticked all the boxes.

Inspector Malcolm Fox, although more clean cut than Rebus still has a bit of the rebellious streak about him and won’t always let protocol get in the way of an investigation. When he is sent to Fife Police to investigate allegations of corruption it is no straightforward matter as the cops close ranks and the “complaints” team have a bit of a task knowing just who they can trust.

But when one of the witnesses is found dead at his home among a load of paperwork dating back to the 80s and a turbulent period in the country’s political history, the trail takes a different slant.

Although you can’t help comparing him to Rebus, Malcolm Fox is a likeable character with enough idiosyncracies to keep the reader interested, and Rankin undoubtedly has another winner on his hands.
