Calendar Girls

Recommended by Debbie Clarke

I watched this film recently and thought it was brilliant. It doesn’t have foul language or a lot of action, but it is guaranteed to make you laugh, as well as shed a tear. Calendar Girls is the true story of the Yorkshire Women’s Institute members who stripped off their clothes to take part in a charity calendar to raise funds for a local leukaemia unit. The ladies came up with the idea after Annie’s (Julie Walters) husband was treated there before his death. Helen Mirren plays her best friend Chris - who is the driving force behind the project. The film also features great performances by actresses Celia Imrie, Annette Crosbie, Penelope Wilton and Linda Bissett. My favourite scenes were the ones where they were doing the photo shoots for the calendar when the women have to pluck up the courage to bare all (although their bits are strategically covered up by flowering plants and sticky buns!). The movie also shows the effect sudden fame can have, particularly how it impacts on the women’s friendships. I think Julie Walters is an amazing actress as is Helen Mirren and I thought they gave outstanding performances. It may be a few years old, but it is still fun to watch.
