My Week: Fiona Purnell

Wedding daze: Well, the first one of the year is over - congratulations to the new Mr and Mrs Williams - just four more to go before the end of September.

I’ve reached that stage where it seems all my friends are settling down and getting married.

It’s great as it means lots of party occasions and get togethers, but by the time I get through the last one at the end of September I think I’ll be all wedding-ed out and need a year off without any to recover ... and so may the bank balance.

Shipwrecked: IN case you’ve managed to avoid all media in recent weeks, Sunday saw people around the world mark the 100th anniversary of the sinking of RMS Titanic. Over the last week I’ve watched with interest numerous programmes and news reports about the disaster.

One programme which astounded me featured ‘dives’ carried out by James Cameron, who of course made the famous Leo and Kate movie on the subject. The team used specialist subs to film the wreck and the detail of some aspects of the Titanic which are still visible after so long at those depths are incredible. Who would have thought after all this time there would still be so much detail visible and items preserved? There was crockery which had been inside a wooden cabinet, the cabinet no longer exists, yet the crockery is all so perfectly stacked as it would have been 100 years ago.

Then there were the patterned glass windows and the Victorian spa. However, although they are still intact, it won’t be long until these things disappear, as micro organisms are continually eating away at the wreck.

Horsing around: After pulling out two horses which looked semi decent in the office sweepstake for the Grand National - West End Rocker and Giles Cross - a win on Saturday just was not to be. They may not have won for me or their riders and owners, but I guess these horses should be grateful they are still alive unlike two of their fellow runners. Poor Synchronised and According to Pete were not so lucky.

They say safety has been improved over the years at the National, but with another two animals dying for what we call ‘sport’ maybe something more needs to be done.

This week ... Went shopping the day after pay day - it was a mistake ...
