Byron a cut above!

A TEAM of hairdressers more used to combing hair than climbing hills showed they were a cut above by opening a charity fundraising salon on Britain’s highest mountain.
The group of stylists, from Byron Hairdressing in Kirkcaldy, battled through the mist and rain to the top of Ben Nevis and offered to cut climbers’ hair in return for donations to cancer charity Maggie’s Centres.
Setting up shop during a break in the downpour, salon owner Ronnie Marshall and seven of his team brought a dash of high-fashion to the Highlands.
Only one person was brave enough to stay on the peak for long enough to get her hair cut, but others enjoyed the unusual sight. With sponsorship, their efforts raised a total of £3500 for Maggie’s, more than three times their target.
The team has been training for the hike since January, dedicating every other Sunday to meeting up and conquering another peak. Their hard work paid off, with the journey to the 1344m summit and back taking just six-and-a-half hours, including the high-level haircuts.
“Copious amounts of hot chocolate, flapjacks and jelly sweets got us up the climb, which was long and relentless and harder than anything we’ve ever done,” said Ronnie.
“We walked up in mist and rain for the whole time. But we did get to fly our flag by showing you can cut hair in even the most adverse conditions.”
Over the past decade the team at Byron has raised more than £20,000 for Maggie’s.
Its most recent event, late last year, was a James Bond-themed day which featured on STV morning news.
“We’ve held charity days every year for the past 10 years, but we were looking to do something really special this year, and then one of my team suggested we climb Ben Nevis together and cut people’s hair at the top,” said Ronnie.
“It’s an immense challenge, most of us are not hill walkers, but we thought it would be a great way to raise some more cash for Maggie’s.”
