Ceres pottery’s jubilee goblet

THE Griselda Hill Pottery in Ceres, makers of Scotland’s historic Wemyss Ware, is making a brand new commemorative piece for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

They have produced a limited edition of 60 hand-painted goblets based on a Wemyss Ware version made at the old Fife Pottery to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1887.

Started in 1882, Wemyss Ware is the only Scottish Pottery which survives from the time of Queen Victoria.

The new earthenware goblets are each painstakingly painted in the Wemyss tradition by skilled painters who have worked at the pottery for at least 20 years.

The design of the goblets has been subtly altered to include symbols of all four nations of the United Kingdom.

Also included is a wreath of royal oak leaves and two sprays of forget-me-nots, a tribute to the Queen Mother, who was a collector of Wemyss Ware.

The pottery will present the Queen with the first goblet made.

Griselda said: “It seemed a fitting tribute to the Queen to create a Wemyss commemorative piece based on one made for her forbear.

“I bought one of the Victorian goblets for us to study, and the few design alterations we have made I hope will only add to the historic nature of the goblet.”
