LEVENMOUTH will have a presence at this year’s Gay Pride event in Edinburgh.

Leven hairdresser Craig Boyd is organising transport from the Kingdom to the annual capital march on June 30.

And he hopes it will signal greater acceptance and improved services in Fife for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community.

The event is intended to celebrate the gay population and progress in equality for homosexuals over the last 40-50 years, but also to highlight that more is needed.

Craig felt it was improtant for Fife to be a part of it – and that the Kingdom might also host its own Pride march one day.

Fife was still rather ‘closeted’ over gay issues, said Craig, although some improvements had been made.

The region had a fairly large LGBT community and he added: “We are just the same as anybody else wanting equality in Fife.”

Craig (34) has been working with LGBT Fife and the Terrence Higgins Trust to bring more services to the area.

The groups aimed to help people aged 13-25 by providing meeting places for them to feel safe and discuss issues like struggling with ‘coming out’ or being disowned by friends or family.

“It’s important to left LBGT people know they are not alone,” said Craig, adding greater awareness and tolerance might make it easier for for people to come out.

A lot of people still struggled because family and friends wouldn’t accept it, and the last thing they needed was others making it worse.

Craig said a number of his ‘straight’ friends were also attending Gay Pride to show their support.

Anyone wishing more information can contact Craig through his Facebook page, as well as Jody Fleming of Fife LBGT on 0131 555 3940 or the Terrence Higgins Trust on 0141 332 3838.
