Fife Diet receives award

THE FOUNDERS of a Burntisland-based food project have been presented with a prestigious award.
Mike and Karen Small of The Fife Diet were given the Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s Geddes Environment Medal after they delivered a talk in Perth Concert Hall on Tuesday.
The Fife Diet originated in 2007 when the couple from Burntisland decided to take their young family on a year-long experiment to see if they could live on food sourced from where they lived.
It has now grown to a network of almost 5000 people dedicated to eating locally.
The Geddes Environment Medal is named after Patrick Geddes, a committee member of RSGS in the 1890s and a radical thinker who coined many popular phrases, including “Think global, act local”.
The Fife Diet was partly inspired by Geddes’ work, and has as the slogan “Think global, eat local”.
Outstanding contribution
The medal is awarded in recognition of outstanding contribution to conservation of the natural environment and developing sustainability.
Mike Small said: “Karen and I are delighted and honoured to be given this award.
“Patrick Geddes’ work continues to be an inspiration to many people because an approach which draws on the Scottish generalist tradition, that tries to see the world as a whole rather than in parts, will always have more impact.”
He added: “As we’re increasingly faced with more separation between land and people, this approach is needed more than ever.”
