CASTLEHILL Primary School in Cupar has become the first beneficiary of the Darren Durrant Lackie Memorial Fund.

The fund was set up in memory of Black Watch soldier Darren, who died while on holiday in Portugal last year at the age of just 21.

Organisers have donated £500 towards Castlehill’s ‘trim trail’, an assault course in the school grounds that helps pupils exercise and keep fit.

Amy Duncan-Morris, a teacher at Castlehill, said the school was “really chuffed” to receive support from the Darren appeal.

CHUFFED

She told the Fife Herald: “We’ve been raising money for about four years, buying a little bit of trim trail at a time.

“This year we wanted to raise a bigger amount so we could build more of the trail at once, keeping installation costs down.

“We were really chuffed to get the support of the Darren Lackie fund.

“The trim trail will cost about £10,000 to complete and so far we’ve raised £6000.”

Darren’s fund was set up shortly after his death with the aim of ‘enhancing the wellbeing of young people in Cupar’.

Supporters of the appeal were able to buy a picnic bench in memory of Darren that was placed in the Haugh Park last November.

Fund treasurer Rod Whyte said: “On receiving a letter from Castlehill asking for help funding their trim trail, the fund sent the school an application form asking for a description of how the money would be spent.

“On receipt of the form the committee held a meeting and unanimously decided to donate £500 towards the build.

“This action portrays the type of funding the Darren Durrant Lackie Memorial Fund was set up for.

“The fund would like to invite local businesses and other organisations to get behind this project financially.”

A ‘Mega Jubilee Quiz’ will be held at Watts on June 3 from 5pm to raise money for the fund.

Members of the public and businesses are invited to enter teams for the quiz.
