LOCAL mums raised their cups in celebration last week as their group marked its first anniversary.

The Kennoway Baby Cafe has become a popular weekly meeting place for mums-to-be and new mums, providing an opportunity to make friends, compare notes and tap into professional advice.

Recognising there was a gap in support available for mums-to-be, Homestart Levenmouth and the Family and Community Support Team started the ‘cafe’, which is held every Tuesday morning in Kennoway Primary School.

Homestart’s early years’ officer, Margaret Laing, said the initiative had been a great success, surpassing its original aims as the mums began to shape what activities they wanted and forged friendships.

Parent and toddler groups can offer welcome support to mums further down the line but it was felt that some women could benefit from making contact with others in the same situation much earlier.

“Pregnancy is a great leveller and most women, no matter their background or circumstances, have exactly the same worries and concerns so the cafe is a great way to share experiences and ask questions,” Margaret said.

The group caters for women during pregnancy and then through until their babies are around nine months, at which stage they move on to other local groups.

Margaret explained that as a result of ideas put forward by members, there have been sessions held on various issues, including safety in the home, baby massage, emergency first aid and sleeping advice.

So far around 30 mums have used the cafe and the anniversary celebrations last week were an opportunity for those who have ‘graduated’ to make a return to meet up with present members.

A written display of their thoughts on what they had achieved from attending revealed that strong friendships had been forged, confidence gained and new skills learned.

So successful has the pilot group been that a second baby cafe has been started at the Balmaise Centre in Leven, which is held at the same time on Tuesday mornings.
