Make cycling a healthy new resolution in 2013

DON’T LET your shiny new bike be relegated to the shed after Christmas.

Join a CycleStart group and you’ll benefit from a series of free, led cycle rides in locations around Fife.

They are specifically designed for people new to cycling, or who haven’t been on a bike in a while.

CycleStart is supported by volunteer ride leaders who lead cycles in their local area.

The rides are free, open to everyone aged 10-100 (10-17 year-olds need to be accompanied by an adult) and are around five miles long, taking around an hour.

They’re also regular, to allow participants to build up experience and fitness.

Clare Hamilton-Sturdy, a CycleStart volunteer ride leader, said: “CycleStart rides are quite social with quite a few of them involving a café stop.

“I’ve heard of some of our CycleStart participants are going out with friends at other times to do quite long rides.

“They have seen their passion for cycling develop, as well as their fitness level.”

Since starting in Dunfermline in late 2011, interest in CycleStart has led the scheme to expand to other parts of north and east Fife.

More than 100 rides have taken place across the Kingdom in just over a year.
