A METHILHILL grandmother is preparing to put her best foot forward to help raise awareness of a muscle wasting condition her grandson suffers from.

Caroline Duncan is organising a sponsored walk across the Forth Road Bridge this spring to raise awareness of, and money for, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a condition her eight-year-old grandson, Shaun, has.

The serious neuromuscular condition is the result of a lack of protein called dystrophin which causes progressive muscle weakness, and around 100 boys are born with the condition in the UK each year.

Caroline (47), explained: “Shaun was diagnosed with duchenne muscular dystrophy in 2007.

“He was able to walk until last August when the muscles in his legs have just wasted away and it’s been pretty hard to come to terms with for us all.

“Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a very rare disease, it’s a crippling, muscle wasting and disease and there’s no cure for it.

“The reason I decided to do a sponsored walk is to raise awareness of the condition and to raise money for research.

“There isn’t a cure to the illness, but the charity Action Duchenne is doing research into it.”

Sponsored

The sponsored walk is scheduled to take place on Sunday, April 7 with Caroline being joined by friends and family for the fundraising event.

Those taking part are currently seeking sponsorship and Caroline has already had a considerable amount of support from people she knows.

She said: “I’ve already collected £200 on sponsor sheets, but we really want to raise as much money and awareness as we can.

“There are currently about 12 of us going to do the walk on the day.

“I’ve never done a charity thing like this before, but I felt now was the time to do something for Shaun and others with this crippling condition.”

To support Caroline’s fundraiser donations can be made direct to the charity at www.actionduchenne.org
