Hero war dog Theo, who died just hours after his handler Lance Corporal Liam Tasker was killed in Afghanistan, is to be honoured with the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross.

Liam, from Tayport, was killed during a fire-fight in Helmand Province in March last year at the age of just 26 with Theo at his side.

Now spaniel-cross Theo is to be posthumously awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal, to go along with the Elizabeth Cross Liam received after his death.

Together the pair located a record number of explosive devices while working as part of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps.

Liam had put Theo forward for the award in a letter written before his death.

Jan McLoughlin, PDSA director general, said: “We are very proud to posthumously award Theo the PDSA Dickin Medal, the highest award any animal can receive for life-saving bravery in conflict.

“Theo’s exceptional devotion to duty as a military working dog in Afghanistan saved countless human lives.”
