Pupils with their Olympic torch
LEVENMOUTH and East Neuk school pupils have been getting fired up for this summer’s Olympics by taking part in a number of specially themed events.
The Buckhaven High cluster of schools and nurseries is hosting its own mini-version of the games, including a torch relay which began on Monday, and pupils in the East Neuk took part in an Olympic-style triathlon.
Coaltown of Wemyss Primary youngsters led the way for the Buckhaven cluster event when they carried a torch, designed by pupils at Buckhaven Primary, to nearby neighbours East Wemyss Primary on Monday morning.
The torch walk is being replicated by each of the cluster schools this week, leading up to a grand opening ceremony at Kennoway Primary School, this coming Monday.
Throughout the term each school will host and take part in replicating many of the Olympic events as part of their ‘Levenmouth is Fit’ project.
Margaret Cumming, depute rector at Buckhaven High School, praised all the schools for participating but gave particular mention to Kennoway Primary for taking care of much of the organising.
She added: “It’s absolutely fabulous. There are so many things going to be happening.
“Every sport you would find from A-Z is covered. We are using the Olympic theme but it also has a health angle to it.
“The opening ceremony should be absolutely great, there will be invited guests and pipers there and an important person to open the gates.”
Meanwhile pupils from Buckhaven High School and Kingsbarns, St Monans and Largoward primaries took part in an Olympic based triathlon recently.
More than 600 pupils, from schools across the area, headed to Cupar Sports Centre for the event organised by triathlonscotland, British Triathlon and Tata Steel.
Children aged from eight to 13 swam, cycled and ran their way round the course, cheered along by their friends.
Each pupil received a tee-shirt, medal, swim cap and goody bag to ensure they can go kitted out to their local club for their next triathlon experience.
National performance triathletes, including British Universities champion Natalie Milne, were on hand to present the pupils with their medals at the finish line.
Ms Milne said: “It’s great to see so many children enjoying themselves and discovering how much fun a triathlon can be. It’s hard work, but very rewarding and hopefully some of the children today will have picked up the triathlon bug.”
