2212027 SSHC ceres goalposts village green in Ceres with one remaining set of goalposts - Village Green, Ceres
ONE set of goalposts is to remain on the Bow Butts in Ceres permanently, Fife Council has confirmed.
Controversy has raged in the village since the council put up posts at the end of March – only for them to be taken down three days later after the community council objected over a lack of consultation.
More than 250 villagers have signed a petition calling for two sets of posts to be placed on the green following a four-week trial period that proved a hit with local youngsters.
Kate Hughes, Fife Council’s area service manager for north east Fife, said: “One set of goalposts will be in place on the Bow Butts.
“We will take them down on Monday, June 4, to ensure the grass is looking its best for the Ceres Highland Games at the end of the month.
“But after that the goalposts will be reinstated.”
Petition organiser Tanya Gracie described the announcement as “great news” for the children of Ceres, but said the campaign for two sets could still be pursued if it was what villagers wanted.
DISCUSSIONS
Ms Hughes commented: “The agreement with the community council at the present time is that one set of goalposts will be in place.
“I haven’t yet had sight of the petition, but we need to take the desires of the community into account and there will obviously be further discussions in conjunction with the community council.”
The council put posts on the green in March to discourage youngsters from kicking balls against a neighbouring resident’s house.
The recent trial period also proved popular with parents, who view the Bow Butts as a more suitable playing location than the Curling Pond Road football pitch on the edge of the village.
Ms Hughes added: “We have arranged for our Active Schools colleagues and youth workers to run official soccer coaching at the Curling Pond Road pitch over the summer holidays.
“The sessions will be free of charge but dates and times are still to be announced.”
