CHILDREN from a Methil nursery have been getting their hands dirty in order to brighten up their surroundings.

Youngsters at the Fishbowl Nursery based in Methil Community Education Centre spent last Wednesday morning adding plants and benches to the community garden at their Bowling Green Street home.

Sharon Lyle (40), the nursery’s parent management committee chaiman, said the children who took part loved being given the responsibility.

“The kids had a great time getting dirty and planting the plants and are looking forward to springtime to see how colourful the garden will be,” she continued.

“Some of them might not have gardens at home so it’s good for them getting in and digging about the dirt.

“Two big planters have the Fishbowl logo on them and there are two new benches enabling the garden to be used and appreciated by all of Methil Community Centre users.”

Garden care

The Fishbowl children will be responsible for caring for the garden and Miss Lyle revealed she has already came up with some other ideas for them to try out.

She added: “My next project is to find out if any garden centres would be interested in donating a small plastic greenhouse type thing so we can sew onion, carrot, strawberry seeds etc.

“The children will tend to them and if successful, can use them in their snack menu.

“My boys, who are four and three, love eating baby carrots straight from the tub they’ve grown the seeds in.

Process

“It will be good for them just to watch the whole process.

‘‘How many teenagers in this day and age don’t even know what an onion looks like?

“To instil it at an early age might mean we end up with a master-chef on our hands at some point.”

Funding for the plants, benches and equipment came from Cleaner Tidier Fife with the help of Fife Council’s parks and countryside department.

>> The Fishbowl’s next big fundraiser is a race night on February 2 in Balmaise Hall, Leven.

Tickets are available at the nursery, which can be contacted on 01333 300950.
