Summer outing for Fife families

Home-Start East Fife summer outing to Falkland Estate.

A RECORD number of families attended Home-Start East Fife’s summer outing, which was held at Falkland Estate and facilitated by the Falkland Centre for Stewardship.

The families took part in guided walks and activities led by woodland ranger, Sam Docherty; woodland learning and development manager, Tess Darwin; and events assistant, Emily Edwards.

The activities consisted of making a ‘journey stick’ or ‘colour palette’ – collecting interesting items in the woods and either tying them to a stick or sticking them to card that could be framed or become a bookmark – and collecting and identifying leaves from a variety of trees and bushes.

Staff, families and volunteers enjoyed a picnic lunch on the playing fields, while the children enjoyed chasing each other around and everyone got to take something home that they had made.

“Everyone enjoyed the activities and the walk around the forest,” said co-ordinator, Lynn England, “and most families, volunteers and staff said they would use these ideas again with their own families or on their own time.”

UNIQUE

Home-Start East Fife provides a unique service for families – recruiting and training volunteers to support parents with young children at home.

Across east Fife, a team of volunteers visit families at home each week, supporting parents in situations as diverse as isolation, illness, bereavement, multiple births and disability, or who are just finding parenting a struggle.

The volunteers provide practical and emotional support and help to build the family’s confidence and ability to cope, thus preventing family breakdown and crisis and the need for intervention of other services.

In addition to home-visiting support, Home-Start East Fife runs two Family Support Groups, in St Andrews and Cupar.

Home-Start East Fife welcomes inquiries from anyone wishing to find out about volunteering opportunities with the charity.

All volunteers receive full training, and the next training course is scheduled to start in the autumn.

Contact Home-Start East Fife staff at 158 South Street, St Andrews, or on 01334 477 548 or visit www.home-start-eastfife.org.uk for more information.
