Teens touching tribute to the fallen

three caring teenagers from Viewforth High School in Kirkcaldy have done their bit to remember Dysart’s war heroes.
Owen Maxwell, Lewis Bissett and Declan Paterson, who are all 14, used their own pocket money to buy 50 wooden crosses with poppies on them and laid one at each of the graves of ex servicemen in Dysart cemetery at the weekend.
Their generous gesture came about after the trio, who all attend the Marine Cadets in Port Edgar, were involved in organising crosses for servicemen and women in the South Queensferry area.
The boys wanted to do something similar for those in their home town, and on discovering there were no plans to do something similar, they decided to organise their own recognition.
Last weekend they went around Dysart cemetery taking note of the graves of those who had died serving their country, coming up with a total of 50.
They then contacted the Royal British Legion in Edinburgh to buy the crosses, pooling their pocket money to meet the £50 cost, and even went up to collect them from Glenrothes last Friday to ensure they had them in time for Remembrance Day.
And on Saturday, helped by another friend Lorcan Duncan (14), from Balwearie High School, they went around the cemetery laying a cross on each of the fallen servicemen’s graves.
Owen’s mum, Tracy Maxwell (42), contacted the Press to let us know about the boys’ kindness.
“I knew nothing about this until last weekend when they disappeared in the afternoon and I asked where they had been. They said they had been at the cemetery counting the graves of the servicemen and they told me what their plans were for the crosses.
“I was really surprised and touched at the idea – how many 14-year-old boys would you expect to come up with something like that – and I told them it was a great idea. I am really proud of all of them.”
Adrian Watt, rector at Viewforth, congratulated the boys on their actions.
“We commend the boys on their initiative and compassion,” he said.
