A KIRKCALDY drama group has won a place in the finals of the Scottish Community Drama Association’s One-Act-Play Festival.
Earlier in the year, some 140 plays from amateur groups throughout Scotland entered the festival, now in its 80th year and Kirkcaldy Amateur Dramatic Society (KADS) is one of the lucky ones to have made the shortlist as one of the top eight in the battle for the Wheatley Tassie trophy. They will perform “Ae Fond Kiss” by Scots writer Anne Marie Di Mambro tomorrow night (Friday) at the MacRobert Theatre in Stirling.
The production is a gentle comedy that brings together Lola, a mid-forties lady of the night, and Zed, whose 18th birthday treat is a session with Lola - paid for by his mates. Michael Westwater, who plays Zed, turns in a nicely balanced performance - treading with some skill, the tightrope that divides the need to ‘be cool and impress your mates’ and at the same time stay true to the person he really is.
While Lola, played by Jacqui Zemmoura, delivers a more than credible performance as ‘the down on her luck, tart with a heart.’ It’s hoped there is every chance these two confident amateur performers, under the direction of Margaret Allan, could see KADS emerge as a winner in this competition.
Margaret told The Press the company is very excited about the performance. She said: “We are all thrilled to have made it to the final.
‘‘This isn’t the first time either as we made it to the last round three years ago. I fell in love with this play as soon as I read it. The actors really enjoy performing it too. But I was worried initially that people would be offended by the subject matter as it is about a prostitute, but no-one has been.”
She added: “We will find out on the Saturday once the adjudicator has seen and marked all the plays. We are trying to forget it is about a competition and just want to give a good performance.”
