GLOBAL drinks company Diageo has urged other Fife companies to celebrate the efforts of their workers and enter the forthcoming 2012 Fife Business Awards.

Diageo, one of Fife’s biggest employers with around 1200 workers, won the ‘Developing Your People’ category in the 2010 biennial awards.

John Paterson, site director, Diageo Leven, said: “The Fife Business Awards are a great showcase for businesses in the area and it is a source of great pride to Diageo to have been recognised in the last awards.”

Diageo’s roots in Fife go back to 1627 through the Haig family – the oldest family of Scotch whisky distillers – and in 1824 John Haig founded Cameronbridge Distillery at Windygates.

High value

The company has invested over £200m in its operations in Fife over the past three years, creating new jobs for Fife and securing high value employment for the long term in the area.

Cameronbridge Distillery is currently undergoing a major capital investment programme with over £100m invested at the site to increase the production capacity and to build a cutting-edge bioenergy facility.

Less than a mile along the road from Cameronbridge, Diageo has also invested strongly at the Leven packaging plant.

Expanding

The site, which bottles Smirnoff vodka, Gordon’s and Tanqueray gins, and Captain Morgan rum, is being expanded to become a major centre for bottling Scotch whisky, with an £86m state-of-the-art bottling hall nearing completion and creating over 400 new jobs in Fife.

Diageo has also invested a further £5m on another new specialist bottling hall at Leven to produce super-deluxe and luxury Scotch whisky products, which are in increasing demand in many of the high growth markets around the world.

“Our most important asset in Fife is the people who work for us,” John Paterson said.

“The awards are a great way of gaining public recognition for the efforts of our employees and for all the great work they do.

“All businesses in Fife who take pride in what they do and want to celebrate the efforts of their employees should consider entering the awards.”
