LEVEN’S town centre appeared to suffer another shop closure casualty last week when the blinds were suddenly drawn at Cafe Rococo on Mitchell Street.
However, while the shop will be shut for the foreseeable future, owners Gary and Gemma Kroegler are hoping to focus more on an online business, promoting their cakes.
Following the closure of Happit in Leven’s High strret shortly after Christmas – and uncertainty surrounding other outlets like the Mountfleurie chip shop and snack outlet Everything On It - customers were saddened when a hand-written note appeared on Cafe Rococo’s door, saying a quick decision had been taken to close the shop indefinitely.
Gary and Gemma pledged to honour all outstanding cake orders, while the message ‘we hope to see you all again soon’ suggested their venture might not be completely defunct.
Gemma later clarified the position on Facebook – and had a warning about the future of Leven High Street trading.
“We made the decision to close mainly for personal reasons as I am having a baby,” she said. “It’s hard being self-employed and you are not allowed days off, let alone time off for having kids! But our priorities changed and we had to make the best decision for our family. We can only apologise to our fab customers for the lack of notice.
“We were actually cake makers, rather than a cafe. We will be concentrating on our online cake orders, so we will hopefully see you all around. All the best and thanks to our supporters.”
In response to some Facebook posts, Gemma added: “We are not fans of the big coffee chains, but to each their own.
“A big chain will never consider Leven as you need the footfall first for them to consider it – and, as many of the shopkeepers will tell you, Leven is pretty dire at the moment.
“There needs to be a major overhaul of the street, and rent and rates need to be seriously reconsidered or you will lose all your quirky independents.
“Good luck to all; it is hard times at the moment and I hope, going forward, things improve for all.”
Cafe Rococo opened in November 2010 in the premises which previously housed Brydies Bakery, before moving months later to Mitchell Street.
