A young man from Ballingry is the latest Fife resident to benefit from an innovative Fife project aimed at getting the youth unemployed back into work.

Daniel McCool (18) has been helped back into work by the Kindom Housing Association’s Fife Works project, which was set up in 2008 to help people find work and training opportunities.

Daniel had already secured a qualification in fabrication, but struggled to find permanent work because of his lack of work experience.

He had been out of work for six months when he contacted the team at Fife Works, but they were quick on the case and, thanks to funding through the Opportunities Fife Employer Programme, he soon secured a 13 week placement with Muirfield Contracts Ltd at their site on Craigie Street, Ballingry, where they are currently building 14 affordable homes for Kingdom Housing Association.

And on completion of his placement, through the Opportunities Fife Employability Pathway the project workers then helped Daniel to apply for a permanent position as a labourer in the Kingdom.

Daniel was delighted when he was successful in his application and was awarded the position.

He said: “The staff at Fife Works were great. They really helped me with my CV and with preparing for the interview.

“The advice they gave me was really useful and I would definitely recommend Fife Works to any other young people looking for work.”

This makes Daniel one of hundreds of young people who have been helped back in to work by the project since its creation four years ago.

Barry Bell, site manager at Craigie Street for Muirfield Contracts LTD, is sure they will be working with Fife Works again in the future.

He said: “This is the first time we’ve had Fife Works trainees on this site and Daniel has worked very well.

“It is a very good programme that we are very keen to be involved in and it has worked very well for us on this occasion.

“We would be keen to take other trainees from Fife Works in future if possible.”

Charles Milne, chairperson of Kingdom Housing Association, is happy with Fife Works’ continued success: “Its goal of getting people into employment has had a very positive impact on communities all over Fife and Daniel is just one of many success stories.”
