EAST Neuk farm shop Ardross has been named as one of the best of its kind in the UK.

Rubbing shoulders with other long-established businesses such as Edinburgh foodie institution Valvona & Crolla, Ardross is one of only six in Scotland to make The Independent’s 50 Best Farm Shops and Delis list.

“This is a little gem of a farm shop, tucked into the corner of the road with the sea just over the fields,” said one of the judges, Rita Exner, secretary of the National Farmers’ Retail & Markets.

“Run by mother and daughter, Fiona and Nikki Pollock, it’s stocked with their farm’s traditionally reared beef and home-grown vegetables, plus other local and Scottish foods.”

The shop, between Elie and St Monans, has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 2005, when the family, faced with increasing pressure from supermarkets and rising costs, decided to sell its beef directly to customers from the farm.

“We’re all absolutely thrilled,” said Nikki, who paid tribute to her staff’s role in winning the coveted placing.

“Customer service and quality are paramount to what we do here and we’ve always set out to be the place where people can pop in every day, whether that’s just to buy a carrot and a bit of broccoli or something more special.”
