A GLENROTHES woman is reaping the benefits of going into business for herself after being made redundant last year.

Lorelle Penman (28) lost her job as a photography assistant in November and decided then that she would strike out on her own, starting a photography business, Lorelle Elizabeth Photography, specialising in portraits and weddings, despite having no previous business experience.

She said: “I went to Edinburgh College of Art where I gained a degree in visual communication specialising in photography.

“I then worked for a photographer for five years. I was an assistant but I also did weddings on my own, worked as office manager, I did a bit of everything really.

“To be honest I wasn’t looking to start out on my own as I was very comfortable in the job I was in, I hadn’t ever thought of going into business for myself but when I lost my job I decided to give it a go.”

Lorelle received help from the Prince’s Trust which she said was invaluable.

“They were great,” she said. “I received a business grant and they also provide you with a mentor to help you at the beginning. It was really helpful.”

Despite her initial reservations Lorelle says she is enjoying being her own boss.

She said: “It’s really good. I can do what I want when I want and make the decisions that are best for me.”

Despite having only started out in February, Lorelle says she is surprised at how busy she has been.

She said: “To be honest when I started I thought this first year would be a write-off as everyone would already have had their wedding photographer booked, but I have had a lot of work.

“The portrait work has been busy too. I also bought a portable portrait background which has been great. It means that people can stay in their own home to get a portrait taken.”

Lorelle is working from home at the moment but may look to expand and open a studio further down the line.

“It’s something I might consider but at the moment working from home suits me fine,” she said. “I don’t have any of the overheads from running a studio for a start.”

And would she recommended being your own boss to anyone else? “Definitely,” she says.

“One of the best things about it is that you’re working in a job that you know you’re going to enjoy.

“And it’s far more rewarding when things happen and you know that it’s all down to yourself.”
