Rachel Henderson

Local businesswoman Rachel Henderson is more than just that, with published author, accomplished designer and college tutor all neatly inked on to her CV.

And the Aberdour-based designer has just had her fifth crafts title, ‘Animal Hats’ published after already releasing four successful books.

Rachel, who was brought up in Dalgety Bay, graduated from Grays School of Art in Aberdeen in 2002 with an honours degree in art, design and craft.

She then went on to work as a design consultant and workshop tutor for Rowan Yarn and it was during her time there that she became interested in design and making her own pieces and started to sell her own creations.

In 2005, she took the plunge and set up her own business, Rachel Henderson Crafts, which specialises in unique handmade gifts.

Since starting the business, she has worked hard to build up her reputation as a skilled designer. Her work has appeared on TV, including ‘The Hour’ on stv, as well as in magazines such as Company.

She has also appeared at several craft based workshops and demonstrations throughout Scotland, and the UK.

Next month, she will even be appearing on Oxford Street for a workshop on how to customise a plain hat into an animal hat.

In 2005 she published her first book, ‘Pub Knitting’, followed by ‘I Love Knitting’, ‘I Love Crotchet’ and ‘Stitch Diva’, aimed at getting young girls interested in the past-time.

And three years ago she felt it was time to add another string to her bow, becoming a lecturer in art and design at Adam Smith College - a job that she loves.

“Teaching is what I’m most passionate about and I think now I have the knowledge of working as a freelance designer, I can pass that on to the students,” said Rachel.

She says her new book, Animal Hats, will appeal to a wide audience.

“I think it’s quite fashionable - festival goers wear them a lot, but I think kids do too, and it’ll never go out of fashion for them, kids will always like wearing animal hats,” she said.

Animal Hats is now available, priced at £14.99.
