john Swinney, Cabinet Secretary for Finance, Employment and Sustainable Growth, enjoyed a tour around one of Fife’s leading social enterprises last week.

Jackie Dunsmuir, chief executive of Recycle Fife, showed Mr Swinney around the depot while discussing social enterprise in Fife.

They were joined by Alastair Davis, chief executive of Social Investment Scotland, a main funder of the voluntary sector.

The Lochgelly-based firm, which has created over 135 jobs since it was established in 2004, of which at least 70 per cent were classed as furthest from the jobs market, offers recycling collection services including skip hire to businesses, public sector organisations and homes across the region.

Thanks to the support from Social Investment Scotland, the company has expanded its recycling depot and invested in new machinery, which has been instrumental in creating new jobs.

Jackie said: “Today has been a great opportunity to show Mr Swinney first-hand the fantastic work which goes on at Recycle Fife, and to give him a real insight into the size and scale of our social enterprise.

“We are one of the largest providers of training placements across Fife with a strong track record for raising awareness of the environmental benefits which result from recycling.

Because of our social enterprise status, we are able to use the income we generate to reinvest in our services and staff for the benefit of surrounding communities.

Mr Swinney said: “Recycle Fife is a great example of a successful social enterprise that is making a real difference to the local community.

“It has used the support it received from Social Investment Scotland to develop its services to help those furthest from the labour market find work and build a greener Scotland in the process.

“The Scottish Government is continuing to invest in the third sector to improve capacity and sustainability so that organisations across the country can play their full part in our programme of public sector reform.”
