Kirkcaldy man training hard for business

A KIRKCALDY man is shaping up to go into business for himself - as a personal trainer.

Stuart Matheson qualified earlier this year and wasted no time in trying to turn his passion into his job.

He said: “I was at Adam Smith College for two years where I gained an HND in Fitness, Health and Exercise. From there I worked in a few gyms in West Lothian before coming back through here to start work at Balgeddie Fitness Centre where I am at the moment.

“I’ve always kept myself fit and I think fitness is important so it’s great to be able to encourage others to do the same.”

It didn’t take Stuart long to start up in business once he’d put his mind to. “I just kind of went for it!” he said. “I qualified in May as a Level Three Personal Trainer from the Fitness Education Academy in Edinburgh so I basically started it straight away. I set up my website and Facebook page and just started putting my name out there.

“It’s going really well so far I already have a couple of clients and it’s looking likely that’ll I’ll have a couple more soon.

Stuart offers a whole range of activities for his clients and each will receive their own unique programme.

“I’m a qualified Advanced THUMP boxing instructor which uses pads. It’s designed to use boxing for fitness, not to teach fighting skills. I can also teach kickboxing and and Suspended Bodyweight. Of course there’s also general things like going out for runs.

“Every client will get a programme specifically suited to them. People’s age and fitness is of no concern. When we first meet there will be an initial consultation which is completely free and there’s no obligation.

“It’s just an informal chat to discuss the client’s exercise history, health & medical background and to find out what they’re looking to achieve. I’ll also analyse their diet and see how it could be improved.”

“My main aim is to make exercise as enjoyable as possible and hopefully the client will have fun. This will help to keep motivation levels high. If you don’t enjoy exercise then it will be hard to keep it going.

“Keeping fit is not just a hobby – it’s a lifestyle change and employing a personal trainer is a huge step in the right direction.”

Stuart is keen to stress that having a personal trainer isn’t just for the wealthy or celebrities. “Definitely not!” he said. “It can be that be someone finds that a gym just isn’t for them and they need a bit of a kick to get them started.

“You can pay a lot for a gym membership and never see an instructor. If you come to me for just a little bit more money you get one-to-one help. Even just an hour a week, every week, with a qualified instructor will make a big difference to someone’s fitness.”

For the time being Stuart will continue his personal training whilst working at his other job but his eventual aim is work for himself.

“I’m combining it with working full-time at Balgeddie but my plan is to gradually reduce my hours there and do this full-time,” he said.

“It’s looking good at the moment and I’m really enjoying it.”
