Laurissa proves high street is still in fashion

WHILE most tales of High Street retailing centre around doom, gloom and closures, one boutique owner from Leven is bucking the trend with her venture.

Laurissa Drysdale opened Maggie’s Farm, primarily a vintage clothing and jewellery outlet, in Dundee in 2010.

Her talent as a designer not only won her a first class honours degree in textiles and fashion design management at Heriot-Watt University, but also attracted the attention of national retailer Topshop, which stocks her own collections.

And the recognition has continued for Laurissa’s work, as she was announced Scottish Independent Retailer of The Year at the recent Scottish Independent Retail Awards.

The local designer told the Mail: “I didn’t know that I had even been nominated for an award.

“I was put forward for it by customers and then people came to the shop as secret shoppers to check on me and my staff, before it went to a judging panel.

“I’ve been to awards before and it can be kind of political with who they give them to, so I appreciate it 100 times more to get an award from customers themselves.”

With the Dundee boutique seemingly now on a pretty solid footing, Laurissa plans to expand Maggie’s Farm.

Within the next few weeks, a second branch will open on Dunfermline’s New Row.

However, Laurissa admits the next step almost never happened after baulking at the rates for her new venture.

“The rates in Dunfermline are ridiculous and I was seconds from pulling the plug on it,” she admitted.

“But I found the money and I’ve just decided to go ahead with it, because it’s been a lot of hard work to get here.”

After the new shop opens, Laurissa says she intends to push on with an internet presence for Maggie’s Farm.
