Writing a business plan may sound boring to some, but to former beauty student Lindsay Penman the exercise opened up a whole new and exciting world.

Lindsay (21) set up her own nail and beauty salon, Loopy Lou’s, after completing her HND Beauty course last summer.

The salon, located in Dalgety Bay, offers a variety of beauty and relaxation treatments and within the six months since it opened has already acquired a large and loyal client base.

Lindsay returned to college recently to talk to current students about her exciting business venture and to share some of her knowledge and experience.

Said Lindsay: “As part of the HND Beauty course we studied a business unit called Preparing and Presenting a Business Plan.

“It was really interesting and got you thinking about what it would be like to set up your own business.

“The unit covered topics such as business names, image, location, competitors, finance and much more.

“Whilst drafting my business plan I realised that this was something that I really wanted to do and so I gave it my best shot - six months later and after a lot of hard work I have my own salon and have also taken on an NC Beauty student from Adam Smith College.

“All of my tutors, both from the Beauty and Business departments, have been a great inspiration to me and really prepared me for working in the Beauty industry and of course setting up and running my own business.

I really enjoyed coming in to talk to the NC Beauty students as part of their business unit.

“I have learnt so much recently that I wanted to share my knowledge and let them know that with hard work and a sound business plan anything is possible.”

Tutor Audrey White said: “I’m so proud of Lindsay - she has shown initiative, determination, hard-work and commitment.

“Since leaving college, she has added to her portfolio of qualifications and has taken every opportunity to network with others in the industry.

“She kindly offered to come in and speak with my current groups of students and this was very inspirational for them. I wish Lindsay every success in the future.”
