Proposal rubbished by bin cleaning boss
BIN THE CHANGES: Robert Nicolson says the new bin collection plans could damage his business.
A COALTOWN of Wemyss businessman has hit out at controversial plans to change the times rubbish is collected.
Robert Nicolson runs a bin cleaning business and says Fife Council’s proposals to do collections on a two-shift system between 6am and 9pm could mean him having to work longer hours, do his rounds twice, or even lose customers.
Mr Nicolson started up Aqua Bin and Power Cleaning two years ago and covers a wide area, with domestic and commercial customers.
He needs the bins to be empty to clean them and follows shortly behind the collections.
“With the new shift system, I would have to be working from six in the morning to late into the night, but who is going to be wanting their bins cleaned at that time?” Mr Nicholson (pictured) said.
“And people aren’t going to want to leave their empty bins out all night for me to come in the morning, when there’s more chance of them getting blown over by the wind or causing a hazard on the pavements when it’s dark.
“I’ve spoken with my customers and not one of them agrees with the changes – so who has Fife Council consulted about this?”
In the latest development, Fife Council has said it will dismiss all binmen who fail to sign up for the new two-shift system, due to be introduced next month.
But the council says it will then re-engage them all on the new terms and conditions of employment, with no break in service.
One in four staff have still not agreed to the new way of working, with the union Unite balloting for industrial action.
But the council insists the two-shift bin collection system will start on Monday, October 15, as planned.
From then, bins will be emptied from 6am to 9pm, Monday to Friday.
