Sky’s the limit for pie kit man

A KIRKCALDY man with a passion for Scotch pies is hoping to develop a recipe for success by launching his own business.

Martin Burns has produced Do It Yourself Scotch Pie kits which provide people with the Scotch pie shells and seasoning and allow them to choose their own fillings.

The 41-year-old, who has worked as a director of F A S Products bakery and confectionary supplies in Airdrie for the past 20 years, came up with the idea after speaking to his sister-in-law.

Martin said: “My wife’s sister told me she really enjoyed Scotch pies but she was reluctant to buy them because she didn’t know what type of meat was in them. I said what I would do is buy the pie shell and just put in your own filling so you would know exactly what was in it. From that, I had the idea of producing the pie shells, this was six months ago.”

The former St Andrews High pupil offers customers two different types of pie shell - the traditional and vegetarian and the kits include a choice of shells (either small or medium) and either a special Scotch pie seasoning or a special gravy mix. He takes the order and then delivers the shells to people who can add their own sweet or savoury fillings.

He continued: “I sat on the idea for two months because I didn’t know how to get it off the ground and how to get the kits to people. But I spoke to someone from MS Creative Design in Burntisland who was a great sounding board and helped me to develop it.”

Martin has started taking orders, is launching his own website this week and also has a Facebook page for the DIY Scotch Pie Company. He has even had interest from Scotch pie lovers across the UK as well as ex-Pats living abroad!

He added: “I’m really excited about this new venture. I have always had a passion for Scotch pies and I’m looking forward to seeing how the business develops.”
