KENNOWAY is included in a major £2.5 billion commercial roll-out of high-speed fibre broadband in the UK.

It will be one of four Fife towns to benefit from BT’s upgrade expansion, which is expected to be complete by spring 2014.

The current UK average internet download speed is 9Mbps but fibre broadband customers can expect download speeds of up to a whopping 330Mbps.

A family could, for example, download a movie, watch a TV replay service, surf the net and play games online, all at the same time.

Councillor Kay Carrington, Fife Council’s executive member for business, enterprise, economy and planning, said the investment would help to build confidence of an economic recovery among local households and businesses.

“This is very welcome news as we move forward in another challenging year,” she said.

“Local firms and households will be greatly encouraged by such a major investment, which demonstrates that we are making progress even in these tough economic times.

“It will reinforce Fife’s strong credentials as a great place to live, work and invest and that Fife Means Business.”

The project - which also includes Lochgelly, Glenrothes South and Dysart – in will take the total number of premises with access to fibre broadband in Fife to more than 114,500.

Around 35,700 are already able to get the service and BT said it was keen to bring more communities within reach by working with the public sector.

Brendan Dick, BT Scotland director, said: “This latest investment is a major vote of confidence in Scotland’s future success.

“It will be a key part of our economic revival as we finally shrug off the effects of the downturn and create a better, more prosperous future.

“Fast, sophisticated communications are the cornerstone of a successful community, helping local people to build their skills and knowledge and encouraging the creation of new businesses and jobs.”
