Saddling up for return to Vietnam

Grant and Scott Jardine

Grant and Scott Jardine

TWELVE months ago, a gruelling charity bike ride on the other side of the world left a Cupar woman fighting for her life.

Now her husband is heading back to the oppressive heat of south east Asia to complete the cycling challenge and raise thousands more for the couple’s favourite good cause.

This time Grant Jardine is taking son Scott, with wife Julie understandably deciding not to return to the scene of her ordeal.

She lay in a coma in a Vietnamese hospital for a week after succumbing to a hydration disorder 150km into the 10-day ride.

Grant (57), a grain buyer, told the Fife Herald: “When I was sitting in the hospital waiting for Julie to recover, I decided there and then that I would come back to complete the challenge.

“From what little we saw of Vietnam it was a tremendous country, and although Julie has quite rightly decided not to go back, Scott has volunteered to take her place.”

Grant and Scott (23) are aiming to raise £4000 for Enable Scotland, a charity that works with children and adults with learning disabilities.

The pair fly out to Vietnam next Friday from London, where Scott works in marketing.

They will cycle from Ho Chi Minh City to Angkor Wat in Cambodia — a distance of 550km — in temperatures approaching 40C.

MEMORIES

Grant said: “We’re looking forward to it.

“I’ve no doubt that memories of last year will come back on day two when we retrace the steps of where Julie fell ill.

“But we’re quite confident we can complete the challenge.”

He added: “When I was packing my bag last week Julie was joking about hiding it!

“I think she was concerned at one point but she’s come round now and is fully supportive of us.”

Grant and Julie (54), a postie in Cupar, have supported Enable Scotland for over five years, raising £30,000 for the charity through various bike rides around the world.
