Bats spared the chop

A METHIL wildlife lover who forced Fife Council into an embarrassing U-turn over work at the Methil Brae recycling centre may have campaigned for nothing.
Vicki Skirving (43) threatened to chain herself to one of the trees that were about to be cut down as part of £500,000 expansion works scheduled to last six months.

Miss Skirving was convinced the council didn't have legal permission to remove the trees in which she claims bats, a protected species, roost.

However last Wednesday Chris Ewing, Fife Council's environmental sustainability manager, forged ahead with the work insisting a survey had been carried out.

It wasn't until Thursday morning, with Miss Skirving in her custom made "Save our bats" tee-shirt demanding to see the survey results, that Mr Ewing backtracked, calling an immediate halt to the work.
