The lucky recipient was Helen Golz (18) from Glenrothes who will be studying biological sciences at Edinburgh University after the summer.
The scholarship was introduced in memory of Ernest Scheller III, president of Silberline Manufacturing Comp
any for only seven months until his premature death in 1977 aged 40 years.
Helen, formerly a pupil at Auchmuty High School, said she was "surprised, very pleased and overwhelmed" to be selected by the panel members.
She explained: "The people who were in for it were really good candidates. We were all pretty much on a level playing field."
The scholarship, which provides £1500 over three years, would be a tremendous help, she admitted.
"Biology is something that I've been really really interested in and I'm really looking forward to studying it at university. After that I'm thinking about teaching or research," she added.
