THE shoots of Levenmouth's regeneration have continued to grow with Diageo last week advertising the first positions for its new Leven plant.
The drinks giant confirmed to the Mail the adverts for electrical and mechanical engineering opportunities are the very first of a drive which is expected to see over 400 jobs created.

Levenmouth's largest employer is seeking planning permission
to create a new bottling plant in the town and this news has been acknowledged as a sign that the ball is now rolling by the firm and welcomed by local politicians.

A spokesman from the company confirmed: "Throughout our restructuring programme, the company's first priority is to help those leaving the business take the right decisions for their future.

"Having reached agreement on this with the unions and employee representatives at the end of last year, we are now in a position to move to the next stage of the programme and prepare for the expansion at the Leven site, which will include creating over 400 jobs.

"In addition to submitting a planning application for the new bottling hall, we are also now starting our recruitment and seeking to employ a small number of skilled tradesmen to support our expansion plans at Leven."

Diageo's expansion in Leven has always been tempered by the situation at Kilmarnock and Port Dundas where hundreds of workers face redundancy due to company site closures.

Many workers from those sites will be offered a transfer to Leven and will create a huge leap in population.

Because of this MP Linsday Roy, who welcomed the adverts for new posts, told the Mail it's now vital the area starts to prepare itself for the influx by improving local infrastructure.

"Diageo, the Energy Park and commuters would benefit from the promised rail link to Leven," said Mr Roy.

"We badly need a review of the roads to Leven from Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes, which at peak times are very congested."

Levenmouth's SNP MSP, Tricia Marwick, said she was glad to hear Diageo had lodged its planning application for the bottling plant, and welcomed the soon-to-arrive new jobs.

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime development and I am delighted that the 400 additional jobs I fought so hard to bring to Levenmouth will soon be available," said Mrs Marwick.

"Diageo has underlined its commitment to Levenmouth and I look forward to continuing to work with the company for the benefit of my constituents."
