So much so that several hundred boxes were still being delivered to Scottish troops, once the postal service recovered from the Christmas rush and severe winter weather.
More boxes were loaded up last week, with the help of members of the Scots Gu
ards, at the Leven Army and Air Cadets' North Street HQ, for distribution via the charity Parcels4Troops.
Around 2000 shoeboxes, filled with small but greatly appreciated luxury items, were donated by readers of both the Mail and its sister title in Glenrothes.
Adult Instructor Andrew Whiting, of the Black Watch battalion, Army Cadet Force, said: "The response has been out of this world.
"Personally, I'd expected maybe around 300-500 boxes, but to get 2000 was amazing.
"In this present climate, with the recession, for the people of Levenmouth and Glenrothes to have given so many boxes is unbelievable."
The army cadets' enthusiasm for the appeal was astonishing too, added Mr Whiting.
"Every week, we were filling our stores – then we had to fill our garage because the stores were full," he said.
"The youngsters gave up their free time and weekends to come down and pack boxes. They even gave up their day before New Year's Eve to do it.
"The cadets were tremendous and we've had great support from the senior members of the cadet force as well."
