A SKETCH painting by Methil artist Jack Vettriano is expected to fetch up to £20,000 for charity later this month.
The retrospective of The Singing Butler, owned by the University of St Andrews, is being auctioned by Sotheby's at Gleneagles.

Vettriano gifted the painting to the university after he painted it in just one hour for a masterclass there in 2003.

Proceeds from the sale will go to the St Andrews Students Charities Campaign, which last year raised a record breaking £160,000 for diverse international causes.

Andre Zlattinger, head of Scottish art, said Sotheby's was "very excited" to be handling the sale.

"The sketch captures one of Jack's most iconic images and will, I'm sure, have huge appeal to collectors around the world.

"Over the years, we've had the privilege of handling the sale of a study for The Singing Butler (in 2003) and the painting itself in 2004 – the latter still holds the record for any painting ever sold at auction in Scotland.

"The Singing Butler image is recognised and loved all over the world."

lPrior to the sale, the painting will be on show at the Fraser Gallery, 53 South Street, St Andrews from August 16-21.
