Waid pupils tidy up Coastal Path
A MAJOR beach clean-up operation saw 120 Waid academy pupils roll up their shirt sleeves and get stuck into two tonnes of litter.
The army of students targeted Cellardyke and the shoreline between St Monans and Ardross in the project with Fife Coast and Countryside Trust and Fife Council.
Last year they did a clean up of Anstruther town and beaches but this time chose areas of coastline which were less accessible and don't have a formal cleaning regime.
Alice Pearson, biology teacher and Eco schools co-ordinator at Waid stated "It was surprising just how much of the litter came from offshore sources with much of it being from the fishing industry in the form of creels and fishing nets.
"It didn't seem to slow the students down and every one involved thoroughly enjoyed themselves and many were amazed by how much they achieved in such a short space of time and how clean the beaches looked at the end of the day.
"After today's efforts all I can say is that I'd like to put this in the calendar as a regular annual event."
