AROUND 3000 Fife women took part in the Kingdom's Race for Life on Sunday, and are expected to raise about £200,000 for charity.
The annual Cancer Research UK event was held in Kirkcaldy's Beveridge Park, where participants walked, jogged or ran the 5 km course, many of them wearing fancy dress.

Many of those taking part had been directly affected by cancer.

Olivia McLean, event organiser said: "The day was a lot of fun, but for many who were taking part to remember friends or family, or who are battling the disease themselves, it was also a really emotional event, as once again the women of Fife proved themselves to be first in the race to raise money to beat cancer.

"It was spectacular to see how many women turned out, and lots of them dressed in pink or fancy dress, making it a really special occasion for everyone.

"So many people are involved in making the event a success and a big thank you is due to all the volunteers who gave their time and energy, and especially to the members of Fife Athletics Club who helped make sure the event ran smoothly."

Family's poignant race day

A PAEDIATRIC nurse at Victoria Hospital ran the race of her life on Sunday – in memory of her best man who died just the day before.

Pamela Cruickshanks (44) and her daughters Jennifer, Fiona and Ailsa took part in the 5k Race for Life at Beveridge Park, and helped to raise thousands for Cancer Research UK.

They ran in memory of Bob Kirkwood, who passed away on Saturday. He was the best man at Pamela's marriage to husband Neil in 1993.

In a celebration of his life, Jennifer (15) won the race, while the rest of the family all came within the top 10 runners.

Pamela, who works in Ward 5 at the Kirkcaldy hospital, said: "We do it every year, but this was especially poignant.

''Our best man died the day before the race, and the girls and I all wanted to put his name on their vests. It was difficult, but it spurred us on.

''He was always interested in our running so it would have made him very proud."
