FIFE Council has been forced to employ external contractors in a bid to tackle the remaining potholes which still litter the Kingdom's roads.
And officers are still counting the cost of the big freeze, with the local authority looking at an estimated £2.3m bill for repairs and other winter measures.

However, George Miezitis, team leader, road services, has stressed that this amount could end up being smaller, as there looks set to be savings in other areas of transportation services.

Following the freezing cold and snowy weather earlier this year, the Council was left to tackle a myriad of potholes and cracks in roads and pavements across Fife.

And they are still trying to tackle the mess.

Mr Miezitis said the Council is still working hard to repair roads around the Kingdom.

He said: "Right now, we have extra squads out across Fife dealing with this problem.

"We have double the amount of potholes that we had last year.

"This process will be ongoing until the problems are sorted out. The situation is unusual, we do not normally bring in outside contractors."

Mr Miezitis added that the potholes themselves are a lot worse and deeper this year, compared to normal winters.

The extra costs come from two Council pots, the winter and patching budgets, which could be overspent by £1.5m and £800,000 respectively.

In an average year the transportation service mends 22,700 potholes across Fife.

Of these potholes, 94 per cent are repaired within set timescales, which is either the same day or five working days, depending on the severity of the risk posed.
