  • Panic over as volume of traffic through pumps returns to normal
KIRKCALDY'S petrol situation is almost back to normal this week as motorists realised that last week's panic was unnecessary.
With regular fuel deliveries still being made to all the town's garages, the chaos of the first week soon passed and this week most filling stations say it has been business as usual.

A few, such as the Shell garage on Hendry Road said they still had minor problems with deliveries of their special V-Power fuel, but both of the large supermarkets - Asda and Sainsbury's said they had full supplies and the volume of traffic through their pumps was back to normal.

Ian Harper, general merchandise team leader at Asda, said things were "absolutely fine."

"After last week it must have got to the situation where the entire population of Kirkcaldy were driving on full tanks," he said.

"For the last week the suppliers have been working flat out, with every available tanker on the road.

"Last week the panic buying caused diesel to run out for a few hours here and there, but it is all back to normal now."

At Sainsbury's too, a spokesman said that the volume of customers was almost back to its usual, with supplies of all types of fuel available.

Shell on Hendry Road said it had had deliveries on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, and the only pump not filled was its V-Power which is delivered from down south.

The story was the same at the BP garage on St Clair Street where normal service had resumed.

A spokesman from Esso's head office said they would like to thank customers who purchased their fuel normally.

"It was just people panicking who were causing the pumps to run out, but that seems to have stopped for the time being," said a motorist.

And with hopes of an end to the pensions dispute at the Grangemouth refinery rising, everyone is hoping that the scenes of last week's pandemonium remain a thing of the past.
