  • Shona's golf day pledge in memory of sister
A LOCAL Maggie's fundraiser is looking for golfers to help drive home the success of another special event.
Shona Hutchison is ready to tee off with her third golf event for our Appeal which will take place on Sunday, August 31, at Dunnikier Golf Club.

And she's hoping to attract teams of golfers from local businesses and golfers from the local community to help make the event as successful as in previous years.

She told The Press she got involved in raising money for Maggie's and keeping the golf day going in memory of her sister who organised the first event but sadly passed away before it took place.

And as well as the golf day Shona has also raised thousands and thousands for our Appeal with events including a casino night at Pettycur Bay and more recently a ceilidh night in February.

She explained: "My sister had breast cancer and used Maggie's in Edinburgh and was an Active Friend of Maggie's Fife and it was her idea to do a golf day. She organised it with my uncle, but died before the first one took place.

"I'm doing it to carry on what she had done. She really just loved Maggie's and I'm sure she felt a sense of ease there - it was somewhere for her to go and have a chat with others in the same situation.

"The golf day has been really successful in previous years and last time we raised £4500. It costs £150 per team of four, which includes a bacon roll and coffee before tee off and a two-course meal after and a goodie bag.

"There will be a trophy, which is in my sister's name, and prizes for the first three teams as well as a silent auction and raffle, with all proceeds going to Maggie's Fife."

One of the superb items up for grabs in the auction will be a set of signed football strips, kindly donated by Kevin Keith, and Shona praised him for his generosity as well as everyone else who has helped.

"Dunnikier Golf Club have been really helpful and are also doing a lot on the day which takes the pressure of me and I've also got quite a lot of friends who have agreed to help out on the day. I'd really like to say thank you to everyone."

Mhairi MacCallum, Maggie's fundraising manager, said: "I know how much goes in to organising events such as these and we really do appreciate all of the hard work Shona and her friends put in to this event.

"Without the fundraising efforts of Shona and those like her, Maggie's would not be able to continue to provide it's programme of information and support to people affected by cancer in Fife free of charge.

"I hope everyone has a fabulous time at the golf day as they help Shona help Maggie's help others as they live with, through and beyond cancer."
