A NEW art project in Kirkcaldy town centre was launched on Sunday.
'Art in Shop Windows' is a creative initiative which has transformed eight empty shop windows into works of art.

The idea was spearheaded by Fife Council and a group of local professional artists, Blacksand Contemporary Arts.

A crowd of art enthusiasts gathered in the converted gallery space at 268 High Street on Sunday, before being taken on a tour of the windows by the artists.

Artist Patricia Bray, talking on behalf of Blacksand, said: "As Kirkcaldy-based professional artists we were very happy to be approached to take part.

"It provides a great opportunity to put our artwork in the centre of town where it's easily seen by the public and we hope that this is the start of further innovative partnerships with Fife Council."

Renowned poet Drew Clegg officially launched the initiative along with Kirkcaldy Central Councillor Alice Soper and chairman of the housing committee Brian Goodall.

An art trail leaflet has also been produced, providing a map and information on the displays which feature a diverse range of art works, from coloured doilies to a creative display using items washed up along the Kirkcaldy coastline.

'Art in Shop Windows' is one of the first projects to kick off Celebrating Fife 2010, which is a year long programme of events designed to raise Fife's profile and showcase its unique environment and cultural identity.

Andrew Walker, economic adviser, development services, has been leading the project.

He said: "Shop windows are an ideal place to exhibit art and they are an excellent way of bringing art to a much wider audience.

"Culture has a unique ability to lift people and places and will hopefully attract new visitors to the town centre and in turn boost the local economy."

The project runs until March 27 and for a copy of the art trail leaflet, contact Andrew Walker on 08451 555 555 ext 442274.
