PARKING chaos at Victoria Hospital has been labelled a 'chronic problem' this week, after weeks of building works have left drivers double parking and mounting the verges.
Since work began on the new hospital building several car parking spaces have been fenced off, leaving visitors and staff to find other spaces in the area, causing traffic chaos around the Hayfield Road site.
Visitors have also complained that sec
urity staff have been issuing warnings in the car park, when there is no other choice but to park on the verges.
NHS Fife has said it has been issuing an average of 50 advisory notices a week, asking drivers to move their vehicles to another space.
It also said the car park still contains 600 spaces, as spaces have just been re-located.
Drivers have also been causing problems by illegally parking in disabled spaces and taking up spaces for visitors to the Maggie's Centre, as well as blocking roads around the hospital site.
Ruth McCabe, centre head at the Maggie's Centre, which is situated in the grounds of Victoria Hospital, said: "We have our own designated parking spaces - five spaces and one disabled space - and over the past few weeks we have actually been encouraging Maggie's visitors to double park because a lot of the spaces are being used by people who are not using the centre.
"It really is a chronic problem for everyone. There are so many people coming to the hospital so it's a huge problem with no easy solution.
Our five spaces are generally enough, but not if other people are parking in them - I would really urge people not to use the Maggie's Centre spaces when they are going to the hospital.
"All we can hope for is when they develop the new hospital it will get better. The roadworks are also not helping, but they are hopefully a short term problem to give longer term benefits."
