  • School radio station proves a hit on the airwaves
A GROUP of Kirkcaldy High School pupils have proved they are on the right wavelength when it comes to reporting by winning two awards for their work.
KHSfm scooped the most original programme and the overall secondary school accolade at the recent Radiowaves Awards ceremony.

KHSfm, an online station which was set up by pupils about a year ago, is part of the Radiowaves online community for young people.

In Scotland, there are over 200 Radiowaves stations and 120 of those are in Fife schools, with Fife boasting the biggest uptake in any one region around the world.

The competition was set up to celebrate the work the pupils have produced and will now be an annual event.

All schools involved took part in the 'Making the News' task and had to produce a news report two minutes 30 seconds in length which had to contain certain elements such as sound effects, music and an anchor person.

Physics teacher at Kirkcaldy High, Sean Duffy, said KHSfm pupils decided to produce and perform a "live" report on the Battle of Raith complete with battle noise and on-the-scene reports.

"When the announcer told us we had won it was really funny because he couldn't pronounce Kirkcaldy!

"We were told beforehand that if you won, you weren't supposed to go right up onto the stage as they were going to play the winner's work, but I had to hold our pupils back - they were desperate to get on the stage!

"When you see the kids' faces it really does make it all worthwhile.
