- Kirkcaldy actor excited by Edinburgh appearance
A KIRKCALDY acting student is making his debut at the Edinburgh Festival with a brand new theatre company.
Lee McPherson (20), who went to Kirkcaldy High School and Adam Smith College before moving to continue his acting studies at Paul McCartney's performing arts school in Liverpool last year, will form part of the cast of Sell a Door's 'The Secrets Inside'.
And it is a role he is looking forward to playing.
"I am a bit nervous, but mainly really excited to be doing this production," said Lee, who is back home living with his parents in the town's Dunnikier Estate.
He will be premiering 'The Secrets Inside' in Stirling tonight (Thursday), and embarking on a week of performances at Venue 45 of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe from August 18-23.
"It is a great honour to be performing at the Festival and it will hopefully lead to some good things in the future. You never know who is going to come along to watch you perform at the fringe!"
Lee was a few months into his first year of a three year acting course at the Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts when he was approached by David Hutchinson, artistic director and one of the founder members of Sell a Door Theatre Company, to take part in their production and become involved in the company.
Sell a Door is made up entirely of students from LIPA who formed their own company to tackle and showcase new, innovative theatre and challenge aspects of society they feel are under-represented.
"It is great to be part of something which is just starting out and is offering students the chance to put on their own productions, and I think 'The Secrets Inside' will be a great success," said Lee.
"I play the part of Brian, a prison inmate who comes across as a bit of a psycho, wide man character, but as the title suggests, he is not all he seems to be and has some hidden secrets."
The production, which was also written by David Hutchinson, examines life in a 21st century prison and looks at issues including rehabilitation and reoffending.
The Stirling and Edinburgh Festival performances will mark the new company's debut, and the cast have been busy rehearsing in Liverpool over the past few weeks.
"David has put a lot of work into getting this to the Festival and we are hoping lots of people will come along to see it and help raise the profile of Sell a Door Theatre around the country," said Lee, who returns to LIPA to continue his studies in September.
