- Kirkcaldy tour for Church of Scotland ambassador
THE MODERATOR of the General Assembly will set up temporary home Kirkcaldy next month, as part of his ongoing tours as the representative of the Church of Scotland for 2008/9.
The Right Reverend David Lunan will be based in the town from August 23 while undertaking a week-long programme of visits to various churches, charities, schools and organisations across Fife.
His packed schedule includes visits to Kinghorn, Pathhead and St John's parish churches in Kirkcaldy, and meetings with various church members and local ministers.
Mr Lunan (63), is also set to tour landmarks such as Fife's Maggie's Centre, Victoria Hospital, the Harbourmaster's House in Dysart and the Forbo Nairn factory.
He will visit Fife Police headquarters in Glenrothes, where he will be briefed on the child offender referral process and meet with the force's newly appointed Chief Constable Norma Graham. During the visit Mr Lunan will be filmed by Gaelic television crew MNE Media.
Visits to schools including Balwearie High School and Kinghorn Primary School have also been scheduled.
And Mr Lunan will also have the chance to see the work of local charitable groups such as the RNLI lifeboat in Kinghorn, VRN hospital radio and the Oasis Project, a support service run by the Lomond Trust which provides accommodation for disadvantaged young people while they get back on their feet.
Rev. Andrew Donald, Pathhead Parish Church minister, said: "We are looking forward to the Moderator's visit, and we hope his varied and busy schedule will give him an overview of what's going on in the community here in Fife."
The tour is part of Mr Lunan's travels as a Church representative in Scotland, other parts of the UK and overseas in an ambassadorial capacity, which has so far included trips to Israel and Palestine.
Mr Lunan was appointed as Moderator of the General Assembly at the Assembly's opening session in May.
Born in London and brought up in Cambuslang, during his career he has served as a Church of Scotland minister in Moray and Glasgow, and has been a strong supporter of charity Christian Aid.
With his wife Maggie, he has co-led retreats and conferences, while study tours with Christian Aid to the Philippines, Malawi and South Africa have informed his continuing concern for world development and mission.
