PUBLIC opinion is against Fife Council building a sports facility on Kirkcaldy's Tolbooth Street as calls for more ambitious plans gather support.
Overwhelming opposition was expressed on Tuesday night when sports users, parents and residents met for a public meeting at Adam Smith College to discuss the future of facilities across the town.
Discussion centred on Council plans to replace Kirkcaldy's ageing pool on a 166-space local authority car park at Tolbooth Street, metres from the existing facility.
Addressing Steve Grimmond, head of community services, businessman Alistair Cameron said: "I do not know why the Dickens you are thinking about developing on Tolbooth Street. What are our councillors thinking of? If they stuff this up then we are stuck with it for the next 40 years.
"To me, this is nothing more than a 'tick-box' exercise."
The meeting was called by Kirkcaldy Area Sports Council (KASC) in connection with The Fife Free Press campaign 'Give Us A Sporting Chance', calling for a multi-purpose facility instead of the proposed like-for-like replacement of the current pool.
Residents called for a larger, more ambitious sports complex, urging Mr Grimmond to explore all possible avenues of funding to ensure a facility which meets modern needs.
