VIEWFORTH High School in Kirkcaldy has been given a good report from inspectors, although there is still room for improvement.
The school was praised for the commitment of staff to take forward steps for improvement, the positive climate for learning and its pupils, who were judged keen to learn and achieve.

Inspectors also noted improvements in levels of attainment among students.

The HMIE report said: "Many young people achieve well and are increasing their confidence and motivation through a range of activities.

"They develop social skills and teamwork, for example through clubs and sporting and cultural activities. Many contribute well to the school community."

The report continued: "Most parents think that the school is helping their children to become more confident and responds well if they raise concerns including about potential bullying."

Areas marked out for improvement include introducing a more strategic approach to school improvement, and continue to develop setting targets to make sure pupils make the appropriate progress in their learning.

The school has also been told to take steps to improve security.

With regard to the condition of the school building itself, inspectors noted Fife Council was aware of the need to improve the security of the building, the canteen facilities and the toilets.

The report concluded: "We are confident that, with support from the education authority, the school will be able to make the necessary improvements in light of the inspection findings."

Headteacher Ian Baxter added: "Naturally the limitations of the buildings and facilities were raised, and the inspectors accepted that all staff were positive about the school.

"They recognised and appreciated the parents, the community and the young people's feelings towards a replacement school in the local area and how this could provide a major boost for further improvements and community partners.

"However, I was glad the report concentrated on the work of the school and on the learning opportunities currently in Viewforth and not on external factors that lie outwith our control."
