THE proposed extension to Ceres Primary School has been nominated for one of the notorious Carbuncle Awards.
A disgruntled local resident has submitted the design for this year's Pock Mark award, given to Scotland's 'worst planning decision'.

Villager Tony Martin argues in his nomination that the plans "do not fit in with the image of a village," and will now wait to see if his suggestion makes the Carbuncles shortlist.

Should the planning application be successful, a wooden-clad extension incorporating two new classrooms will be built on to Ceres Primary School, part of which is B-listed.

In an objection on Fife Council's planning website, Mr Martin writes that "the façade of the extension is in direct contrast to the buildings in the surrounding area".

He goes on: "In principle I have no objection to an extension to the school provided it is in keeping with the existing building.

"I think however that erecting a glorified garden shed has no place within this urban environment."

Fife Council has come out in support of the plans, with school estates co-ordinator Dawn Cook describing them as "suitable and sustainable".

She said: "It's sad to hear that the extension has been nominated for a Carbuncle when it's not even been built.

"The extension to the school is only at the planning stage so if people want to comment on the design they are able to do so until April 20, 2010."

Ceres Primary will face 'competition' for the dubious Pock Mark accolade from the Beauly to Denny power line, among others.
